The Upbringing of Youtube
Youtube was born in 2005, by Jared Karim, Steve Chen, and Chad Hurley. The name Youtube was created for a very specific purpose. "You" represents that all content created on the site is user-generated and "Tube" is a term for television. Youtube is a television created only by users. Youtube is the largest and most popular video distribution media platform there is on the Internet. It is not only where you can watch innocent videos, but people are given the opportunity to create and display their own original content on the site as well. Youtube has developed tremendously from being an average video content platform to becoming a billion-dollar company. Youtube was inspired by the 2005 Super Bowl malfunction with Janet Jackson, and the devasting tsunami that hit the Indian Ocean. They designed Youtube as a way for people to get their news about the world through the use of video.
Youtube generated their big break in September of 2005 when they acquired a Nike advertisement on their site which led them to obtain 1 million views. This advertisement went viral all over the internet, giving Youtube that exposure it needed to put themselves right in front of consumers. Since 2005, Youtube has only gotten bigger and bigger. Hundreds of videos are uploaded to Youtube almost every minute. Youtube was eventually bought by Google, for 1.65 billion dollars. Today, Youtube is one of the biggest social media platforms on the Internet.
The biggest impact that Youtube created for our society was it allowed for people to post videos about topics they love. People were able to be themselves and make videos based upon their own interests. It allowed people the opportunity to meet and connect with people who have the same similar interests. It created a cohesive family over the internet. It brought people together through the distribution of mainstream news, social media news, and just basic information that is going on within our world today. Youtube allows people to express their thoughts and opinions in a safe online environment, where no one can judge you if they disagree with you. People feel comfortable enough to talk about any issues they like, that are present within our everyday lives.
